1. Call to Order
The regular March 2026 meeting of the Sergeant Bluff-Luton Board of Education was called to order by President Jeff Wright at 6:00 a.m. The meeting was held in the AEA Building, Room 2.
2. Approval of the Agenda

President Wright welcomed the visitors and asked if anyone present wished to address the board.

7. Recognition
Recognize and congratulate the Pro Start students: Alan Cunningham, Ayson Galinsky, Ryleigh Hansen, Gabriel Hernandez, and Amber Sweum.
The Pro Start Management Team for finishing 1st place at the State Pro Start Competition and qualifying for the national competition. Each student has earned around $10,000 worth of scholarships from a variety of colleges and will earn more once we go to nationals.
This is our 4th State Championship in the management competition in 11 years.
We are also the only school who has done both culinary and management competitions for the past 11 years.
Recognize Mrs. Massey and the choir for providing students to sing the national anthem at volleyball and wrestling.
Recognize Brea VanDen Top being named to the all-district basketball team.
Recognize the boys wrestling team for winning the district championship
Recognize our state wrestlers: Ben Walsh finished 2nd, Jayce Curry 6th, Luke Gray 6th, Josh Gray, Kyler Tendal, Drake Howard, Dax Koedam, Noah Chapman, Jack Zeleny
Recognize Adam VanderSchaaf for his 300th career win this season.
Recognize Miss Struck as well as the 4th grade and 3rd grade students for their performances on February 5th and 27th.
Recognize SBL Middle School Show Choir for:
Earning 2nd place, and for Sophia Cappetta for being designated as an Outstanding Soloist at the Sioux Center Show Choir competition.
Savannah Moseman Outstanding Performer at Bishop Heelan
Recognize SBL High School Show Choir for earning the 2nd place trophy in the all girl’s show choir category at Bishop Heelan.
Recognize the SBL Jazz Band for earning the 2nd place trophy at the Lewis and Clark Jazz Festival.
Recognize Anna Pry for earning the Outstanding Musicianship award at the district Jazz Band festival in LeMars.

f. Approve DCAP - District Career & Academic Plan
Mr. Klingensmith reported on the DCAP. The DCAP outlines the implementation of the career and academic planning process outlined in Iowa Code. The plan provides a living context for how the district supports their students' personal academic plan process. Districts are encouraged to work to build and maintain strong relationships with external partners such as business and industry as well as post-secondary institutions to increase high-quality career planning exposure and support for students.

m. Consideration of additional special education position at the middle school for the purposes of a behavior program
Motion to approve the addition of a special education position for the behavior program in the middle school.
Dr. Brown and Mrs. Albert presented on the need for another special education teacher at the middle school to implement a therapeutic classroom program to meet the needs of the middle school special education program. They will be applying for the therapeutic classroom grant through the state of Iowa that the high school received three years ago. Behavior and IEP data were shared to support the need. There is currently programming at the elementary and high school, but not at the middle school. Primary grade students are served by the elementary program. The position would provide a continuum of services across the district.

10. Superintendent Report
a. Girls' Wrestling
Mr. Janzen shared that Hinton is discussion no longer sharing wrestling so they can remain in the smaller class now that they have more than one class for wrestling. The district will be seeking coaches for the girls' wrestling program.
b. Date for 1st Public Hearing of FY2026 Budget
The legislature changed the process in 2024 to two public hearings. The board set the date for the 1st public hearing for the Fiscal Year 2027 budget on April 9 at 6 a.m. at the Northwest AEA (Parking A, Door 8) Room 2.
The second hearing will be at our regular meeting on April 16 at 6:30 a.m. at the Northwest AEA (Parking A, Door 8) Room 2.
c. Facility Update
Superintendent Janzen shared that final items are being completed by school staff to get the East Campus ready for the 1st events this spring. Additional seeding and repair of the baseball warning track will be completed by Nelson Construction as part of the original construction contract. Dirt from the holes for the scoreboard beams will be used to fill in the washout along the road.
He also shared that the district will be seeking donations for picnic tables and benches at the East Campus. Name plates of individual or business donors will be on each bench or table. Information will be shared via email and social media soon.
d. Liability Coverage for Insurance
Mr. Janzen reviewed the liability coverage for insurance.
